The effects of cancer and cancer treatment not only assault the body but also lay siege to the heart and mind. Having a positive attitude, relying on one’s own spiritual and emotional strength and having loved ones to provide positive energy while rejecting negative situations are all integral parts of becoming a cancer survivor. The Riding Thru It Program specifically addresses the challenges facing many cancer patients, survivors and their families by using horses to make dramatic breakthroughs in awareness, and to facilitate life affirming experiences. This new program is designed to help cancer patients improve their health — and overall quality of life — in a soothing, non-threatening, non-clinical environment. There is something about a horse that allows us to let down our guard and explore our vulnerabilities.Horses lend themselves to us as a mirror for our emotions and insecurities. That in turn, allows us to grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Having undergone treatment for breast cancer beginning in 2013, I have experienced firsthand the benefits of interacting with horses and the impact that it has in reducing stress and anxiety while aiding in recovery time. As the founder of RE-RIDE Quarter Horse Adoption Program, the formation of The Riding Thru It program is my way of sharing the unique experience and benefits of horses as healers with other cancer survivors. As an added benefit, the grooming and care, as well as the riding of the horse are great physical therapy.

The goal of the program is to bring cancer patients together with horses to create a unique, life affirming experience while engaging the patients in the care of the horses that are donated to the RE-RIDE program. The focus of this program is to offer cancer patients the experiential benefits of equine assisted therapy in a non-clinical environment. Patients can participate in different activities that benefit them both physically and emotionally to help aid in their recovery from cancer. The Program will be customized for all participants, based on their comfort level around horses, and their physical situations. Groups will meet once a week for six week duration. No previous horse experience required.

The Riding Thru It Program is a community outreach program offered through The RE-RIDE Quarter Horse Adoption Program.
